Mount Auburn is a privately owned institution. Its grounds and historical collections are open to the public and visitors are welcome every day of the year from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM October through April. From May through August the grounds remain open until 7:00 PM.
In the fall the closing time may vary. Please call the main number: 617-547-7105 to check the current closing time.
A variety of maps and materials about the Cemetery are available
at the Entrance Gate and in the Cemetery office. The Cemetery
office is open 8:30AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. On Saturdays
the office is open for Cemetery business from 8:30 AM to noon and
information is available through 4 PM.
Burial or Family Lot Confirmation
To confirm that someone is buried at Mount Auburn, please send the full, correct spelling of the individual's legal name and the approximate date of death and/or burial to info@mountauburn.org.
Request for Additional Research
Once you have confirmed (see above) that an individual or family is buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery, you may request a search of the Cemetery's archives for information about the individual or the burial lot by filling out a Research Request Form and sending a prepayment. To obtain a Research Request Form and fee information, contact the Historical Collections Department at research@mountauburn.org or by mail (Historical Collections Department, Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA 02138).

Etiquette
Mount Auburn is still an active burial place. It is a sacred site, and visitors are expected to behave appropriately.
- Visitors are allowed to drive in the Cemetery and may park on any roads without a green line.
- Bicycles and motorcycles are not permitted but may be parked at the Entrance Gate area.
- Buses and other large vehicles are not permitted.
- Groups wishing to visit the Cemetery must apply for permission at least two weeks in advance. (Click here for more information.)
- Pets are not permitted.
- Recreational activities such as picnicking, jogging, and rollerblading are not permitted.
- Gravestones are fragile. Please do not touch them. Gravestone rubbing is prohibited.
- Photographing funerals is prohibited. A special permit must be obtained for all film making and commercial photography. (Call 617-547-7105.)
