Birch Gardens Developed

“A garden woodland weaves through the space, blending classic Mount Auburn forms and surfaces: lawns, shrubs, groves of trees, granite and water… trees herald the entrances to the space and clusters of elegant, spring-flowering amelanchier trees—used for centuries in New England memorial landscapes—are scattered along the path.”
-Craig Halvorson Landscape ArchitectBirch Gardens is Mount Auburn Cemetery’s most ambitious new memorial and an answer to the 21st century’s evolving needs for burial and commemoration as it offers a wide range of burial options. The area encompasses nine sculpted granite wall panels with space for personalized inscription. Each wall panel section is connected to the others by a Victorian-style cast iron fencing inspired by the Cemetery’s historic entrance. It was designed by the award-winning landscape architect Craig Halvorson of the Halvorson Design Partnership in Boston and completed in September 2008.
