In 2002, Mount Auburn lived up to its reputation as one of the premier spots to witness the spring Gulf migration when it was recognized as one of 79 Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Massachusetts by Mass Audubon.  An IBA is a site that provides essential habitats to one or more species of breeding, wintering, and/or migrating birds. There are some 50 species of birds that have been known to nest within Mount Auburn’s 175 acres, in addition to the roughly 25 species that are permanent residents. For this reason, Mount Auburn also plays a unique role in research and monitoring projects that aid in conservation and education.
