Heywood chronicles the evolution of “the Lawn”: the changes in its landscape, as described by Jacob Bigelow; the erection of several important hillside tombs and monuments, including the First Corps of Cadets monument; a revolving cast of architects and landscape designers; and the garden’s renaming, from Lawn Avenue Garden to Asa Gray Garden in 1942.

Biographical Note: Charles Bulfinch (1763-1844) by Judy Jackson and Cathy Breitkreutz
Architect Charles Bulfinch, born in Boston in 1763, was responsible for the design of the Massachusetts State House and the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. He is buried with his family on Bellwort Path.
