Open Position: Greenhouse/Nursery Apprentice at Mount Auburn Cemetery

This working position will provide practical greenhouse and nursery production experience to a student or recent graduate of an accredited horticulture program. The applicant will be involved with overall operations of the greenhouse and nursery, including the production of bedding crops, propagation, IPM, floral decoration and sales. The apprentice will participate in continuing education programs and field trips when offered.

• Works with the greenhouse management and plant healthcare specialist to learn the duties necessary for plant production in Mount Auburns greenhouses and outside growing areas (cut-flower garden, nursery, experimental garden), including propagation, transplanting, watering, fertilizing and weeding as assigned by the Greenhouse/Nursery Manager.
• Assists with recordkeeping and tracking of plants.
• Participates in the organizing and planting of annuals in more than 400 AC/PC lot beds.
• Assists with floral decorations for sale in the flower shop and for mail order customers, including cut flower arrangements in vases, basket bouquets, log baskets, sprays, potted plants, wreaths, niche bouquets, etc. Assist in the production of holiday decorations and floral arrangements, and process orders and retail sales as needed.
• Place tributes on graves throughout the year as needed.
• Keep the greenhouses, head house and related structures well-organized and clean.
• May be required to work overtime during the Easter and Memorial Day.
• Follow all Cemetery safety policies and procedures related to assigned tasks, including wearing personal protective equipment (eye and hearing protecting, gloves, etc.), proper handling of chemicals, ladder safety, and lifting and moving heavy objects.
• Must present a good image in dress, grooming and personal hygiene per the Cemetery’s dress code policy and adhere to company work hours.

Qualifications and physical demands include but are not limited to:
• High School Diploma and completion of at least one year in a Greenhouse or Nursery program or equivalent experience preferred.
• Exhibit knowledge for care of bedding plants and groundcovers
• Exhibit knowledge of plant propagation and IPM practices
• Familiarization with plant record systems such as BGBASE preferred.
• Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite programs
• Ability to work alone or with other members of the Horticulture staff.
• Ability to read map of Cemetery grounds.
• Comfortably communicate with staff, outside vendors and contractors, lot owners, customers, and visitors
• Valid driver’s license
• Exhibit knowledge for care of bedding plants and groundcovers
• Exhibit knowledge of plant propagation and IPM practices
• Familiarization with plant record systems such as BGBASE preferred.
• Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite programs
• Ability to work alone or with other members of the Horticulture staff.
• Ability to read map of Cemetery grounds.
• Comfortably communicate with staff, outside vendors and contractors, lot owners, customers, and visitors

Work Schedule: 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM from Monday to Friday. Occasional evenings and weekends as required.
