Administration Building and Story Chapel walkway improvements

September 25, 2023

Mount Auburn is starting construction on walkway improvements around our Administration Building and Story Chapel to make the buildings accessible to all and separate pedestrians and vehicles. Construction began in early June and will be complete in the fall. We will continue to improve the aesthetic of the landscape in the spring with new plantings throughout the area. We apologize for any inconvenience that temporary closures of roadways or building will cause during this period. Thank you in advance for your understanding while we make improvements for all visitors.

This Project Includes

— An accessible walkway connecting, for the first time, all four levels of the two buildings.

— A new walkway between the Administration Building and Story Chapel will provide a safe and gently sloped route between the two buildings.

— Bench seating along the walkway and a new garden area will provide horticultural improvements and moments of quiet reflection for visitors.

— The walkway between Story Chapel and the lower-level Columbarium will be more accessible by descending along a circular wall to a small entry courtyard and floor level entrance.

Fall 2023 Update

As of September 25, Central Avenue is closed to all traffic. Look for detour signs to navigate around the closed area. The Visitors Center has been moved to the Egyptian Revival Gatehouse – where you first enter the Cemetery – visit us for maps and info. The public restrooms will remain open for now, but in several weeks time they will be temporarily replaced by portable toilets.
