In 1842 the Cemetery’s Egyptian Revival Gate, initially built in wood, was rebuilt in granite in the same architectural style. Two years later, the wooden fence running along Mount Auburn street was also replaced with a permanent iron fence.  Both the Egyptian Revival Gate and the iron fence were designed by Mount Auburn’s principal founder, Dr. Jacob Bigelow.
